Tarsiana, an ancient Story
Una antigua historia

Bilinguall Stories, Tarsiana

Re-told by Rita Wirkala

The Story

This thrilling story, rich in multiple meanings, is about the adventures of a girl of ancient Greece. Although it takes place in a faraway land of kings and slaves, of beautiful princesses and evil stepmothers, of rich merchants and pirates, of opulent palaces and terrible shipwrecks, the core of the story is, nevertheless, relevant to children today and forever.

In accordance with the ancient tradition of narrative that joins entertainment with the transmission of elements inherent in human development, the tale is centered on the character of a feminine protagonist who fights for survival and does not allow life’s vicissitudes to corrupt the nobility of her heart. It is also a story about the cultivation of personal aptitudes and of knowledge and its application. Finally, the metaphorical archetype of death and rebirth of the transformed soul is present in various ways in the principle characters.

Sources

The 13th Century verse narrative called The Book of Appolonius, whose author is anonymous, was widely known among Spanish readers of the Middle Ages. It is based, in turn, on a Greek story from the 3rd Century, whose author is also anonymous.

After The Book of Appolonius there were many widely read versions of Appolonius of Tyre in the Middle Ages. These appeared in Latin (in the Gesta Romanorum, and in the Pantheon of Godfrey of Viterbo); in French (Le Violier des histoires romaines); in English (Laurence Twine, London, 1576 and 1607, and the B. Thorpe edition of 1834) and in other European languages. Shakespeare used this story in his play King Pericles.

One anonymous editor wrote in the introduction to one of the medieval versions of the book:

He who is prepared to find gold and jewels in muck will be a suitable reader of this book.

The Present Edition

Rita Wirkala has prepared the present bilingual version utilizing elements of several of the sources cited above. She has modified archaic language of the medieval sources but remained faithful to the original plot, to the details of the narrative and to the Hellenistic culture and beliefs of one thousand seven hundred years ago. Her intention is to retrieve from relative obscurity this inspired story and to share with young readers the richness of the lessons that it contains.
